Kristen TenDyke has been designing knit and crochet garments since 2005. She lives right here in Waldo county with her partner and 2 sons. She spends her days homeschooling, and doing the various aspects of knit and crochet designing. Kristen focuses on interesting sweater constructions, which are now usually seamless. She’s written 3 books, including Finish-Free Knits, No-Sew Knits (both from Interweave Press), and a book focusing on using eco-friendly Maine based yarns—Knitting Maine.
In 2010, Kristen began a growing collection of patterns that are dedicated to supporting the use and production of eco-friendly yarns. Her Caterpillar Knits patterns use yarns that are organic, fair trade, low carbon footprint, recycled and animal friendly yarns that use low impact, natural dyes, or no dye at all. By creating these patterns, Kristen hopes to inspire others to join her quest to sustain the well-being of our Earth with each yarn decision we make.
When designing crochet garments, Kristen loves to bring what she knows about knitting into those designs. For example, in the newly published Kaya Vest, crocheted in Quince & Co. Sparrow, the lower band ribbing is reminiscent of ribbed bands on knitted garments, but it’s worked entirely differently! The lower band is worked side-to-side, then the first row of the body is worked along one selvedge edge of the lower band. The body is worked in the lace pattern as one piece from the lower band to the underarms, where the back and front are divided and worked separately to the shoulders. The lace pattern is both written and charted.
