Mirja knit the Alaska hat using Rowan's Felted Tweed Colour. Felted Tweed has been a tried and true yarn for Rowan, and a few years ago they added a multicolor/gradient option to the line. Our experience is that although the gauge range is listed at 22-24 sts/4", we have knit this yarn at a tighter gauge, making a lovely fabric. (Its ball yardage is closer to that of a fingering yarn.)
Mirja was looking for a yarn that would give the illusion of the northern lights and the result was exactly what she was looking for. Because she made a smaller hat, she spliced the yarn in one section to quicken the color change. She used some stash yarn for the ribbing and trees. The pattern is available on Ravelry for $4.25.
